Signs of the Zodiac
Aries - March 21 to April 20
Symbol: the Ram
Aries' reputation for egotism, action, and self-assertion
is not based solely upon its fiery, cardinal characteristics,
but also upon its position as first sign of the zodiac.
At the first
degree of Aries the entire cycle of experience represented
by the zodiac recommences. It represents the seed moment,
the germ of all actions, the point at which movement
commences. As such Ariens are entrepreneurs, leaders,
adventurers, courageous, impulsive and highly motivated.
Ariens spot future possibilities and develop them first,
usually pushing their own interests.
Taurus - April 21 to May 20
Symbol: the Bull
This sign values a comfortable, safe and unchanging
environment, and likes to hold on to the past. Taurus
is down to earth and practical, and is also one of
the most productive of signs. The bull is an ancient
fertility symbol; Taureans like to be engaged in producing
things that can be of use. A fine appreciation of
beauty and form is combined with creative power; Taureans
often have artistic skills.
Gemini - May 21, 22 to June 21
Symbol: the Twins
Geminians are often maddeningly inconsistent; they
can argue one point of view one day and the completely
opposite view on the next. It is the actual process
of thinking and communicating that is important to
Gemini, not the end result. A firm conclusion is not
necessary so long as the mind is kept well exercised.
Geminians often become writers, orators, journalists,
teachers, secretaries, lawyers, computer programmers,
or take up
other activities in which their mental skills can
be exercised.
Cancer - June 22 to July 22
Symbol: the Crab
Cancer is a sign of compassion, which embodies all
that is best in the caring maternal instincts, but
it often hides its emotions behind a mask that denies
these inner feelings.
Cancerians are vulnerable and easily hurt; the confident
mask they wear in public serves as a defence against
the rough and tumble of the world. When upset, Cancerians
may withdraw further into their shell, but they also
snap at people, imitating the crab's sharp pincers.
Leo - July 23 to August 22
Symbol: the Lion
A fire sign, ruled by the Sun and symbolised by the
lion, the king of the jungle, this is the most egotistical,
proud and ostentatious of all the signs. At their
best creative, artistic,
colourful, generous, honest, warm hearted and natural
leaders, Leonians can easily cross the line into being
excessively vain, flamboyant, extravagant and selfish.
They require an audience and even quiet Leos contrive
to make an impression, judging their own behaviour
as reflected in the mirror of audience response. The
myth of Leo is the myth of the king, but in all
true kingship personal power is balanced by obligations
and duties.
Virgo - August 23 to September 22
Symbol: the Virgin
The key to the understanding of Virgo lies in the
symbol of the Virgin. This is not a passive, feeble
virgin, but rather a form of the earth mother, the
ancient fertility goddess. The virgin
in this sense is pure, but also robust, fertile and
potent. Virgo can be one of the most practical and
productive of signs, and is prepared to sacrifice
its own interests in order to
complete its allotted tasks. It is above all a sign
of service and self-sacrifice.
Libra - September 23 to October
22
Symbol: the Scales
Libra is best understood through its symbol, the scales
of balance. The scales were originally those that
the Egyptian gods used to weigh the souls of the dead,
and Libra is a sign
that spends its life weighing up different possibilities;
few signs are so aware of different choices and possibilities
as this one. Often Libran types are crippled by indecision,
unable
to make a firm choice and face the commitment that
this involves. Some Librans resolve the dilemma by
making a choice and, even though it may not be the
best option, sticking to it
through thick and thin for fear of having to make
yet another decision.
Scorpio - October 23 to November
22
Symbol: the Scorpion
The intense emotions of this sign are toughened by
Mars, given an obsessive quality by Pluto and channelled
into a rigid mould by the fixed quality. Scorpio types
develop passionate interests and devotion to causes
which they pursue with death defying dedication. Those
under this sign have an instinctive sense of what
is right and what is wrong, and though this may be
in contradiction to accepted morality, it nevertheless
provides a powerful personal motivation. Scorpio types
fall deeply in love, but if hurt or rejected can spend
hours plotting bitter revenge. They are usually interested
in things deep, dark or hidden, which cover a range
of activities.
Sagittarius - November 23 to December
21
Symbol: the Archer
The combination of mutability with fire makes the
sign unstable; its plans are often dropped before
completion. In this characteristic Sagittarius takes
its nature from the flying
arrow; it is more important to travel than to arrive.
This sign is marked by long journeys, whether of the
mind, spirit or body. As it is the sign of Jupiter,
the ruler of wisdom, Sagittarian journeys are often
idealistic experiments in religion, philosophy, or
the arts where the desire is to elevate the human
spirit. Sometimes the journeys are physical; Sagittarians
are often possessed by wanderlust. The purpose is
the search for truth.
Capricorn - December 22 to January
20
Symbol: the Capricorn
The most commonly known side of Capricorn is that
described by the combination of the goat, Saturn and
the earth element. This is dull, materialistic, practical,
unimaginative, serious, and
cautious. The Capricorn is the ideal industrialist
or merchant, letting no humanitarian concerns interfere
with the important business of making money. Of the
goat, it is said there are two kinds: the first remains
in domestic captivity, tethered to a post, the second
is the wild mountain goat, leaping from peak to peak.
The first will work hard to be rewarded with a position
of minor responsibility, while the second becomes
a captain of industry, the multimillionaire of western
capitalism.
Aquarius - January 21 to February
19
Symbol: the Water Carrier
The water carrier is depicted pouring water out of
a vast container, an image that symbolises the ability
of this sign to spread new ideas. Aquarius is concerned,
sometimes to the point
of obsession, with being new, radical and different.
Often it is eccentric, frequently awkward, and always
demanding complete personal freedom.
Pisces – February 20 to March
20
Symbol: the Two Fishes
Emotional, sensitive and vulnerable, Pisceans lack
the hard shell of those under the influence of the
other two water signs, Cancer and Scorpio. Their defence
against the world is,
therefore, to wear disguises, and these people are
skilled in adapting to different situations, concealing
their real feelings. They are like chameleons, changing
their colour at will. They often appear to be a part
of whatever is happening, when, in fact, they have
drifted off into a private fantasy.
